A pup has come. A Jack Russell Cross. She sleeps - mostly - sneaking an eye open to check I'm still around. She has been waking 5-6ish in the morning, which is ok. By 6ish I could be up anyway to make my savoured first coffee. But - usually - I take it back to bed.
Alas, no more!
First, there is a trip out to a cold garden, followed by a bit of playtime, before pup goes back to bed for another snooze.
However, if a pup (which she did) wakens at 2am, the garden is dark and very chilly. And then there is no coffee, and definitely no playtime! This was misunderstood by pup and resulted in 15 minutes of indignant wailing, and me constantly coming to the top of the stairs to 'Ssh!' her - determinedly.
I've never wanted a dog on, or in, my bed!
Not since one cold night at my sis's, when a young whippet sneaked under my blankets and 'swam' about under the covers like an aquatic eel, licking any bit of exposed skin with excitement and relish! I might have let her stay there, 'cos I was half-asleep, but the whippet pup just wouldn't calm herself, and had to be taken back to her basket.
Not an experience to be repeated by a pup the size of a small bunny, that is not yet toilet-trained!
To recap: I had to determinedly 'Ssh!' her from the top of the stairs, but then I slept lightly with one ear open for any sign of whimpering. Just like having a newborn, I thought to myself. And that light sleeping all mothers have to get used to. I'm sure it lasts for about 3 years. And then switched on again whenever your child is ill. Since my kids are adults, I had rather accepted deep snoring sleep as a given!
And I'm sure this pup thinks I Am her Mum. She greets me with such excitement first thing. Like she's wriggled completely out of her onesie skin, and back into it again - if you follow?
I'm recognising a pattern of frenetic activity, punctuated by hours of recouperation. I expect sleeping helps her grow.
Daughter2 said, 'A pup isn't just for Lockdown!' But the pup is definitely a distraction. However, she isn't my escape route, 'cos the pup is also on Lockdown for another 4 weeks. Until she gets all her jabs!
Hey ho! Life goes on. One day at a time.
But now with more of a woof in it!
: )
