The Arrogance of Age

I never watch the last bit of The Chase if the finalists are 20ish or younger. I just reckon that they're going to lose 'cos young people don't know as much as older people. Older and wiser, isn't that the saying? Besides the questions are probably written by someone around the same age as The Chaser, so that gives them an added advantage, surely?

Soz but I'm not saying that young people are stupid!! Young folk know all about browsers and servers and all that computer speak, that leaves oldish people like me slightly left-footed. Minute by minute, they can be texting and keeping in touch electronically. When I was young (violins) there were few phones (landlines). None cordless. You were confined by the length of the cable, and abt 30cms more if you had the luxury of a curly cable. So you walked to a friend's house (they probably didn't have a phone, so no pre-arranging possible) and if they weren't in, you walked home again! Slightly haphazard method of keeping in touch by today's standards!

When I was younger I admit I had moments of stupidity. Like when I watched Blue Peter on April Fool's Day when they ran a feature on harvesting spaghetti from the trees in Italy. I believed that for about 5 years until I bought a packet and found it was made from Durum Wheat! In my defence, Liptons didn't stock dried pasta, so I had only ever encountered small tins of Heinz Macaroni Cheese. I wasn't a fan of cheese and it just tasted like a salty cheesy mush that could, quite conceivably, have been made from cooked plant stems!

I also admit that, until fairly recently, I surmised that it was perfectly possible to swim under islands. Floating Islands are desserts, Mum, my daughter had said, in an astonished, incredulous tone. In my defence, I knew they didn't float about like icebergs! Maybe I thought they had a rocky tap root that held them to the sea floor, or something? Thing is, I never really thought about it. Instead, I had a nursery book picture in my head of a flat, sandy seabed (yes, probably coloured yellow) with wrecks & treasure chests & other jetsam, all stacked up like stuff in a junk shop. It came as a revelation that the seabed can be mountainous with submerged volcanoes.

You're never too old to learn!

I'm off to mow the lawn. I know that weeds are suppressed by constant mowing. Now who can I impart that knowledge to? One daughter has a veranda, the other has decking and my son has raised beds. Hey ho !!
