A Brisk Walk

I am an advocate for a good walk! I admit that I have rather sedentary preferences like thinking & writing, and rather static pursuits like painting & planning. So, walking is essential for getting the circulation moving and the endorphins working! And I'm conscious that if you don't use it, you'll lose it! I want to stay active for a good few years yet.

So, as I was out for my brisk walk this morning, I passed an old man idling at a street corner. I said Hi and carried on, in my own little daydream. But he imparted some info that touched me on at least two levels.

'That's my neighbour'. He pointed at an even older man making very slow progress along the pavement, pulling a tartan shopping trolley behind him. He was very doddery on his feet. But he placed each foot on the ground meticulously & determinedly. 'He's over 100 and still goes to the supermarket'. It reinforced my belief that staying active keeps you independent, and I was heartened that, out of his sight, the old man's neighbour was taking time to look out for him & make sure that he got home okay.

Like at most stages in life, it's not only who you are that counts, but also who you know. Let's hope there's always someone out there keeping an eye on us too : )
