Yellow? I'm more scared of Pale Peach

Do you like yellow? To some it's a happy sunny colour with a positive optimistic vibe.

It's that burst of brightness from daffodils, coltsfoot and primroses in spring - such a relief after the drab greyness of dark winter!

Yellow is the first colour that immediately attracts the human eye, (red is the second colour).

When I was an art tutor, I often warned students about painting a bright yellow field of oil seed rape in the far distance of their paintings - just because, visually, it will be pulled forwards. It needs to be dulled down with a touch of its complement, pale violet, to allow it to sit there more happily.

Yellow can go to the blue spectrum and have a cool green tinge, or to the red spectrum and have a warm orange tinge. Imagine the colour difference between a lemon and a yellow pepper?

My fave yellow Soft Pastels are: Naples Yellow and Chrome Yellow. In the past, pigments for Chrome Yellow and Cadmium Yellow, were sourced from heavy metals. This ensured that these natural pigments remained more stable and light-fast in the finished artwork. Now, because of safety fears, manufactured pigments are used more often. Safer but maybe not so permanent?

However, these problems with yellow would not make me ban it! As an artist, I couldn't work without it! It is a Primary Colour!

I read this week, that Spain has banned yellow in Catalonia, because of it's political overtones! How outrageously absurd to ban a colour!

I mean, there are colours that I don't particularly like:

* Pale Peach - reminds me of old-fashioned nylon underwear. Not flattering against a pale skin colour!

* Sky Blue - intense dislike, although I like it on a classic car!

* Dark Grey - it just looks sludgy - like it's the end result of every colour being sucked out of it!

* Deep Purple - although I like the rock group!

* Lime Green - it just sets my teeth on edge!

But I still wouldn't ban them!

If Yellow was good enough for Coldplay then.........I rest my case.

'Look at the stars, look how they shine for you, and everything you do. Yeah, they were all YELLOW.'
