Do you like blueberries?
If you were to ask me that up to, say, 2 weeks ago, I would have replied, 'YES! Love'em!'
However, I had a cataract done in my other eye six weeks ago, and daily since the op, I've eaten a handful of blueberries - 'cos I read somewhere that blueberries promote eye health.
Maybe if I'd known 10 years ago about the wondrous health properties of blueberries, I would have started this regime sooner? But, hey-ho, every now and again Life deals you out a duff card - and you just have to get on with it!
But I digress.
I've daily chomped my way through blueberries on their own - eating them like sweeties. I've sometimes mixed it up and had them with brown sugar. I've topped them with yoghurt, cream, ice cream, sour cream, evaporated milk, fromage frais, even custard! I've mixed them with apple, then banana, and even fresh mango AND pineapple, and lastly tinned peaches! I've plonked them on top of individual portions of shop-bought trifle, cheesecake, jelly and even tiramisu. Last night, I shoved them in the icing of a lemon sponge!
Safe to say, I'm becoming a bit disenchanted with them now.
I went to the fridge just now - to look for something tempting - and 2 full packets of blueberries were sitting there, waiting to be opened. Luckily I spotted a bag of bite-size Fudge Minis. I feel guilty now that I've eaten 5, very quickly!
Oops! How did that happen? I'll need to take an extra handful of blueberries tonight!
The Vit E in blueberries may help stop the formation of cataracts. Anthocyanin-rich blueberries will not only improve your vision but also protect it. Antioxidants are necessary in your body's fight to reduce oxidation. Oxidation ages your cells.
Let's all 'Boo!' oxidation then... and eat a couple of blueberries?
