Living tiny

I watch a programme called, Tiny House, Big Living. The strapline is: 'Have you got what it takes to live in a tiny house?'

Well, I think I would have to answer, 'Yes' and 'No'.

I'm moving house soon. Packing up and heading north. Not quite Caithness - but almost there! My life plan is: Caithness eventually - but taking fairy steps!

So far, I've packed 12 small boxes of kitchen paraphernalia. These alone would surely swamp a tiny house? But what's interesting is the stuff I haven't yet packed. My kitchen essentials.

These consist of 2 plates, 2 bowls, 4 cups, 4 sets of cutlery, 8 teaspoons. It's not that I'm expecting a few dinner guests, it's more that I'm not one of those people who immediately washes up after themselves. So I've given myself some leeway. And, anyway, isn't it greener to wash a basinful of dishes instead of constantly tackling one or two?

My herb shelf now only holds jars of seasalt, black pepper, parsley, chili powder and cumin. And I've minimalised my choices of tea and coffee. My storecupboard only holds 2 packets of quick pasta (cheese & brocolli) and 7 packets of dried rice (mushroom & garlic). These emergency packets have been stockpiling at the back of my cupboard for some time. They have all passed their sell-by date. I shall attempt to consume them in the next 3/4 weeks but, obviously, I've not been that keen on them in the past!

However, these pared-down kitchen items WOULD fit in a tiny house. Quite neatly, I imagine! And when I stare at my Jenga of packed kitchen boxes, I think to myself, 'Do I really need all that stuff? Whateveritis?'

How extremely liberating it would be to live in a tiny house!

I know someone who completely furnished his flat with charity shop furniture. The cost was minimal and the money went to a worthy cause. But - most importantly - when he moved on, he just got it all picked up by the same charity firm. And he left town with just one carload of his personal effects!

As I stare at my boxes piling up like lego bricks, I'm thinking there is some merit to his modis operandi. I'm getting boxed-in with STUFF!

So maybe I could live in a tiny house? Less possessions would surely equal less work?

But could I seriously abandon my 10 boxes of books? True, I could keep all my books in my pocket on a Kindle. But holding a Kindle doesn't do it for me. I prefer the feel of a book.

And what about my pics and art stuff? I could just keep them as images on my camera? Naw, that doesn't work either.

Maybe the answer to the question is: yes, I could live in a tiny house - but several of them!  All linked together like a train of circus caravans! One for living; one for books; one for art stuff.

This notion is plain silly.

I don't have an HGV licence.

Not to mention the Berriedale Brae.

Enough said. It's time to carry on packing!
