Home is where the <3 is

I have a hankering for a slice of Scandi - muted colours, painted wood, cabled throws, sheepskin cushions - all that gorgeous natural-textured sorta stuff. Know what I mean?

But could I really live with all that diluted colour and all those bare unadorned walls?

My wee cottage would certainly suit this pared-back minimalist approach - making small spaces appear light and airy, andallthat. But, alas, I'm too much a fan of colour and mixed patterns. There are no bare walls in my house! Any sizeable wall supports a patchwork of paintings, jigsawed together like strawberries in jam, or peanuts in Nut Brittle, or currants in a Fly Cemetery (a fruit slice traybake)! I'm very sweet on covered walls. I think I crave visual stimuli!

I admit that I viewed potential homes by guesstimating how much I could jam on the walls. Everywhere I look, in the rooms I have so far decorated, I see pattern, texture, pictures, photos, books, maps, nickynackynoos & sparkle. Maybe Eclectic? Shabby-chic? Rustic? I don't know what my style is. It's certainly not Bohemian, or Steam Punk.

And, Heaven-help-me, I seem to have developed a Coastal bathroom. How did that happen?

In Inverness, I hung a large still life painting in my small bathroom. I liked the juxtaposition. The composition of the still life just happened to have a few shells, some pebbles & driftwood in it. So, my tiny photo of Latheronwheel Harbour sat quite happily beside it. Then I bought a 3D driftwood boat, 20cm x 20cm, with 7 shiny zinc fish dangling from ropes from its hull.

Well, it reminded me of that novel by Neil Gunn, The Silver Darlings, all about the dawn of the herring fishing industry in the Highlands about the time of The Clearances. And it sat easily beside my photo of Latheronwheel Harbour. And it seemed apt 'cos my uncle and grandfather were fishermen there. And my Uncle Sandy as a lad, was an extra when a sequence of The Silver Darlings was filmed near Latheronwheel in 1947.

So, all those items sat together with a tenuous link known only to me!

But in my new abode, they have morphed into full-blown Coastal. Joining them is my Mermaid pic, a shell photo, a driftwood mirror and a ropework bathmat.

I have totally tinked up the bathroom! It actually has a tip-top shower and fittings, and left unadorned would have looked quite Hotel Chique!

I'm slightly worried 'cos I've found myself being attracted to those pics of intricate sailor's knots. Aaargh! STOP ME!

Thank goodness the joiner & crew are coming on Monday to tackle the open-plan space upstairs. They will start creating glass walls.

I don't think there's much you can hang from glass?

But you never know!

I'll keep you posted.
